General Tips & Guidelines

We offer handgun, rifle and bowhunting in all our areas, with bowhunting-only areas also available. The general availability of water in streams or earth dams and troughs means that the game does not concentrate at waterpoints as they do in the drier areas of South Africa, and therefore we do not predominantly hunt from hides at water as is the general practise elsewhere. There are hides at selected locations, and the general method for bowhunting is a combination of walk-and-stalk between these points with an hour or two then spent in a hide. In this manner you will cover a fair amount of ground yet have the opportunity to stop and wait for the game. Good camouflage is required, including a face net. Our animals are tough so a minimum bow is around 60 lbs, shooting at least a 350 grain arrow for the smaller species. For bigger game like Hartebeest and up an arrow weight of 400 grains plus is recommended. Mechanical broadheads have been known to deflect easily so preference is for fixed blades of at least 100 grains. There are shops with bowhunting equipment close by if needed.
For the rifle hunter a good minimum calibre is 270, with the 300s being very popular. It is good to bring a rifle you shoot comfortably rather than something bigger that may cause flinching!
Rifles are available for hire if required, and this can minimise the documentation headaches at the airport. All the rifles for hire are accurate and comfortable to carry.
Handgunners should bring good quality camo and knee pads, since the key handgun areas will require a fair amount of low stalking and the rocks are sharp!
No shooting of any sort (except with camera!) is permitted from vehicles, and no shots at running animals are allowed unless that animal is already wounded. Each client will be required to shoot in his/her rifle before any hunting commences to ensure the rifle and sights/scope are undamaged and sighted in: we suggest that you sight in about 1 to 1 ½ inches high at 100 yards. The general practice here is to use shooting sticks in the form of a tripod as a rest if within a reasonable distance, and it is recommended that you try and practice off something similar at home for a couple of weeks if possible.

Medical/dietary issues.
When booking with us please fill out the relevant sections for health so that we can ensure your hunt is a happy and healthy one. There is a good health facility near every hunting area in case of emergency, and our staff are trained in first aid if necessary.
We do have a number of poisonous snakes in the area, but generally they are not common during winter. It is unlikely you will see any snakes during your trip but one should pay attention to stepping over rocks, just in case!
